What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent, natural-looking solution to replace a missing tooth from root to crown. There are three parts to a dental implant:

  1. The Implant: A screw that serves as a root for your new teeth. This is the part that will permanently attach to your jaw.
  2. The Abutment: A permanent, but removable by your doctor, connector that supports and holds a tooth or multiple teeth.
  3. The Crown: Also known as the prosthetic tooth, this is the part of the tooth that you can see. It’s usually made of porcelain to ensure durability and a natural appearance.
Different Parts of Dental Implant

Implants fuse into your jawbone to prevent disintegration, a consequence of tooth loss that can affect the shape of your face and your ability to chew properly. Dental implants provide excellent support and stability so you can eat all your favorite foods with ease. Best of all, implants look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth, giving you a restoration option that can last a lifetime.

The Dental Implant Process

Transforming your smile with dental implants requires multiple appointments over several months with dental implants. The dental implant process will be completed in three steps:

  • null

    Initial Consultation

The first step is scheduling your consultation with one of our talented dental professionals. During this first visit, we’ll evaluate your teeth, gums, and jawbone to determine if dental implants are right for you.

Some patients may need to undergo a supplemental procedure before receiving their implants to ensure a successful placement. If you fall under this category, we’ll let you know during your initial consultation. Any questions you may have will also be answered during this time.

    Implant Placement

Once you’re ready, your dentist will place your dental implant or implants directly into your jaw. They’ll protect the surgical area with a healing cap to begin the healing process. In most cases, it’ll take three to six months for your implant to heal and merge with your jawbone. This is a natural process known as osseointegration.

    Final Restoration

Once your mouth has fully recovered from implant placement, you’ll return to our office so your dentist can attach your customized restoration. Depending on your needs, this may be a porcelain crown, a fixed dental bridge, or full-arch dentures. Then, you’ll be ready to leave our office with a beautiful new smile.

Candidacy for Dental Implants

You may be an ideal candidate for dental implants if you:

  • Have healthy gums and enough bone to support the implant.
  • Are healthy enough to undergo a routine tooth extraction or oral surgery

If you lack the sufficient bone density needed to support implants, a supplemental procedure such as bone grafting can prepare you for treatment.
